World Asthma Day 2025: Making Inhaled Treatments Accessible for All

Asthma is a long-term lung condition that affects the airways, making it difficult for individuals to breathe freely. It is one of the most common chronic diseases worldwide, affecting more than 260 million people and responsible for over 450,000 deaths annually, many of which are preventable. At New Crystal Health Services, we join the rest of the world in commemorating World Asthma Day 2025 under the theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL,” as declared by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA).

What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition of the airways that leads to symptoms such as:
•    Wheezing
•    Shortness of breath
•    Chest tightness
•    Coughing (especially at night or early morning)
These symptoms occur when the airways react strongly to certain triggers, becoming inflamed and narrowed, which restricts airflow.

Common Causes and Triggers
Asthma may be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some common triggers include:
•    Air pollutants and allergens (e.g., dust mites, pet dander, pollen)
•    Cold air or sudden changes in weather
•    Physical activity (exercise-induced asthma)
•    Respiratory infections
•    Tobacco smoke
•    Stress and strong emotions
Understanding personal triggers is essential for preventing attacks and managing the condition effectively.

Treatment and Management
Fortunately, asthma can be well managed with appropriate care. The cornerstone of asthma management is the use of inhaled medications, especially inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) which treat the underlying inflammation. When combined with short-acting reliever inhalers, they help prevent severe attacks and improve long-term breathing control.
GINA strongly emphasizes that every person with asthma should have access to these essential inhaled medications to reduce the burden of the disease. Sadly, in many low- and middle-income countries, including Ghana, access to these treatments is often limited due to high costs or unavailability—contributing to 96% of global asthma-related deaths.

Our Call to Action
At New Crystal Health Services, we echo GINA’s call to action for policy makers, healthcare providers, pharmaceutical suppliers, and community leaders to work together to make life-saving inhaled treatments affordable and accessible to all. As a people-first healthcare provider, we are committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in asthma care.
