December is here, a month of celebrations, reunions, and joy! However, amidst the festivities, it’s essential to prioritize your health and well-being. At New Crystal Hospital, we want you to enjoy the season while staying informed about key health concerns, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), stress management, and proper nutrition. This week, we’ll focus on STI awareness and prevention.
Understanding STIs
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are primarily spread through unprotected sexual contact, but some can also be transmitted during pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and through infected blood or blood products (WHO, 2023). These infections have significant health consequences if left untreated, including:
• Neurological and cardiovascular complications
• Infertility and ectopic pregnancies
• Increased risk of stillbirths and HIV transmission
The majority of STIs present no symptoms, making regular health checks crucial. When symptoms do occur, they may include vaginal or urethral discharge, genital ulcers, and lower abdominal pain.
Types of STIs
• Bacterial STIs: Curable types include trichomonas, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. However, antimicrobial resistance, especially in gonorrhea, is a growing concern.
• Viral STIs: These include HIV, herpes simplex virus (HSV), hepatitis B, human papillomavirus (HPV), and human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). While these infections are lifelong, some like hepatitis B and HPV have vaccines to prevent severe outcomes like liver and cervical cancer.
Prevention and Early Detection
• Condom Use: Correct and consistent use of condoms is one of the most effective ways to protect against STIs and HIV.
• Vaccination: Vaccines for hepatitis B and HPV can protect against severe complications.
• Screening: Early diagnosis through regular health checks ensures timely treatment and reduces complications.
