Understanding Prostate Cancer: What Every Man Should Know

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide. Although it often grows slowly, when left undiagnosed or untreated, it can become aggressive and life-threatening. At New Crystal Health Services, we believe that early education, regular screening, and timely treatment can make all the difference. This article aims to provide you with essential knowledge about prostate cancer, its risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

What Is Prostate Cancer?
The prostate is a small gland in men, about the size of a walnut, located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It produces seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate begin to grow uncontrollably. It typically starts in the outer part of the gland and can spread to nearby organs if not detected early.

Global and Local Statistics
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men globally. In 2022 alone, over 1.4 million new cases were recorded worldwide (WHO, 2023). In Ghana and across sub-Saharan Africa, the numbers continue to rise due to limited awareness and late-stage diagnosis.

Risk Factors
Several factors can increase a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer:
•    Age: Risk increases after age 50. Most cases are diagnosed in men over 65.
•    Family History: A man with a father or brother who had prostate cancer is more likely to develop it.
•    Race: Black men are more likely to develop prostate cancer and at a younger age.
•    Diet and Lifestyle: High consumption of red meat and low intake of fruits and vegetables may increase risk.
•    Genetic Factors: Certain inherited gene mutations, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2, may also play a role.

Common Symptoms
Prostate cancer in its early stages often presents no symptoms. However, as it progresses, the following signs may appear:
•    Difficulty starting or maintaining urination
•    Weak or interrupted urine flow
•    Frequent urination, especially at night
•    Pain or burning during urination or ejaculation
•    Blood in urine or semen
•    Pain in the lower back, hips, or thighs
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention immediately.

Diagnosis
Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. At New Crystal Health Services, we offer a comprehensive screening and diagnostic process that includes:
•    Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Blood Test: Measures PSA levels, which may rise in men with prostate cancer.
•    Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): A physical examination to feel for abnormalities in the prostate.
•    Imaging Tests: Such as ultrasound or MRI, to determine the extent of cancer.
•    Biopsy: A sample of prostate tissue is examined for cancer cells.

Treatment Options
Treatment depends on the stage of cancer, the patient's overall health, and personal preferences. Common treatment options include:
•    Active Surveillance: For low-risk cases, especially in older men.
•    Surgery (Prostatectomy): Removal of the prostate gland.
•    Radiation Therapy: High-energy rays target and kill cancer cells.
•    Hormone Therapy: Reduces the levels of male hormones that fuel cancer growth.
•    Chemotherapy: Uses drugs to kill rapidly dividing cancer cells.
At New Crystal Health Services, we provide personalized treatment plans supported by a team of urologists, oncologists, and general practitioners.

Prevention and Healthy Living
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent prostate cancer, adopting a healthy lifestyle can reduce your risk:
•    Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
•    Reduce intake of processed foods and red meats
•    Stay physically active and maintain a healthy weight
•    Avoid smoking and limit alcohol intake
•    Go for regular check-ups, especially after age 40
